International conference on plastics and elastomer materials for devices, implants and instruments used in medicine and surgery

15-16 September 2015, Crowne Plaza Boston/Woburn, Boston, MA

Organized by Applied Market Information LLC (AMI)

AMI's Medical Grade Polymers 2015 international conference took place September 15 - 16, 2015 at the Crowne Plaza Boston/Woburn Hotel. The event focused on the use of thermoplastics and elastomers in manufacturing medical and surgical devices, including pharmaceutical delivery, implants, combination devices, wound care, patient-contact instruments, fluid exchange equipment, tissue scaffolds, catheters and bags.

The medical device industry is subject to the most stringent standards worldwide, because of the critical uses of its products. Careful design and material selection can improve patient and healthcare worker compliance by adding aesthetic elements such as an attractive outer and soft touch handling - plastics and elastomer compounds offer the whole range of options and can minimize parts by simplifying the manufacturing process. Material selection criteria range from matching the physical and chemical properties to biocompatibility testing and minimizing extractables and leachables. Manufacturing technologies are advancing with cleanroom molding and micro-extrusion and the customization of devices with 3D-printing. Innovative biodegradable materials have a key role in short-term applications such as cellular substrates and dispersible sutures.

Medical Grade Polymers 2015 provided an opportunity for medical and pharmaceutical companies to network with the device manufacturing industry and materials experts to discuss the latest developments in markets, technical and regulatory issues, and review quality production technology for medical and surgical devices.
